This week, I had the opportunity to join Stephanie Ramos on ABC News Live to talk about the biggest travel trends shaping summer 2026 - and one thing is becoming incredibly clear: people are prioritizing experiences and meaningful memories more than ever before.
Despite rising travel costs and higher gas prices, Americans traveled in record numbers over Memorial Day weekend, according to AAA, showing just how important travel has become for families and travelers looking to reconnect, explore, and create lasting memories together.
I’m seeing a major shift in how people approach travel this year. I call it “Memory-First Travel.”
The Rise of “Memory-First Travel”
For many travelers, vacations are no longer simply about getting away. People are becoming far more intentional about how they spend both their time and money, prioritizing trips that create emotional connection, meaningful experiences, and lasting impact. This trend bridges generations and price points from budget conscious to luxury travelers.
“Memory-First Travel” is showing up in so many ways this summer:
Multigenerational travel continues to grow as families prioritize quality time together across generations
Educational and experiential travel is booming as parents look for immersive experiences tied to history, culture, art, and nature
Travelers are planning trips around concerts, sporting events, festivals, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences
Bucket-list travel remains strong, especially experiences that feel personal and memorable
Nostalgia-driven travel is also having a major moment, including iconic American road trips, international locations, and classic destinations
As someone traveling the world with my daughter while incorporating worldschooling into our adventures and sharing the experience with all of you, we see firsthand how meaningful travel experiences can shape perspectives, inspire curiosity, and create lifelong memories.
America’s 250th Anniversary is Inspiring Travel
One of the biggest drivers of travel this summer is the lead-up to America’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
Travelers are embracing:
Historic destinations
Heritage and cultural travel
National parks
Small towns and Americana
Scenic road trips across the United States
There’s also growing excitement surrounding the 100th anniversary of Route 66, with celebrations and events planned from Chicago to Santa Monica.
The World Cup is inspiring a new generation of fans to see soccer as part of a broader cultural connection. I think many travelers are craving a sense of nostalgia, connection, and rediscovery right now - especially after years of rapid change in the travel landscape.
Travelers Are Being More Intentional With Spending
Even as travelers continue prioritizing experiences, they’re also becoming smarter and more strategic about how they spend.
I always encourage travelers to:
Look for perks that can save money
Watch carefully for hidden fees
Plan ahead for transportation costs
Balance luxury experiences with authentic local experiences
Be strategic with road trip fuel stops, since gas prices can vary dramatically from state to state
What’s especially interesting is that travelers are not necessarily cutting back on meaningful experiences - they’re simply becoming more intentional about where they choose to splurge and where they save.
Travel is About Connection
More than anything, the biggest trend I’m seeing this year is that people want connection.
They want experiences that bring families together. They want travel that feels meaningful. They want moments their children will remember years from now.
Whether that’s exploring historic destinations, taking a bucket-list cruise, experiencing another culture, or simply enjoying a classic American road trip together, travelers are increasingly looking for trips that create stories and memories that last long after the vacation ends.
And to me, that’s what travel has always been about.
