How We Travel Better for Less: My Conversation with CBS St. Louis

Had such a great conversation with Heather from CBS St. Louis ahead of Memorial Day about one of my favorite topics: how to travel well without overspending.
At FoodFamilyTravel, we’ve always believed in what I call “balanced luxury” - finding ways to experience incredible destinations, amazing food, and meaningful family memories while still being smart about where you spend and where you save.
You don’t have to sacrifice the experience to travel affordably. Sometimes it’s as simple as taking a road trip instead of flying, staying in a walkable neighborhood to avoid transportation costs, packing smarter, or discovering a city through its street food instead of expensive tourist traps.
For us, balanced luxury means staying in an incredible hotel or resort right in the center of the action to avoid overspending (aka wasting money) on transportation costs. Use public transportation or walk whenever possible and spend your money where you want to have the best impact- that Michelin-star restaurant, once-in-a-lifetime concert, incredible tour or special experience. Avoid wasting money on tourist trap eats, or transportation which can eat away at your budget and double costs of your trip.
One of my biggest tips? Don’t underestimate destinations just a few hours away. For St. Louis, cities like Chicago and Nashville offer incredible food, music, culture, and family fun without the cost of a major international trip.
And yes - I’ll always say street food is one of the best ways to truly understand a place and its people.
So grateful to Heather and the CBS St. Louis team for having me on to share our approach to family travel heading into the busy summer season.
