The Best Places to Travel This Spring (Before the Crowds Arrive)

Spring is one of those rare, magical windows in travel- the shoulder season that still feels like a secret. Winter has softened, summer hasn’t surged, and everywhere you look, the world is waking up. It’s lighter. More breathable. More livable.
For me- and for FoodFamilyTravel- spring is about balance. It’s about finding places that feel elevated but not overwhelming, beautiful but still accessible, and, most importantly, memorable for the entire family.
Right now, there is nowhere that captures that energy quite like New York City.
New York City — Spring, Reimagined
Spring is when New York comes back to life.
Cherry blossoms, tulips, and dandelions bloom across Central Park (and you can visit the Central Park Boathouse for a light lunch outside again). The city shifts- outdoor dining returns, neighborhoods buzz again, and suddenly everything feels possible.
And then, the flowers.
The Macy’s Flower Show transforms Macy’s Herald Square into something immersive and transportive- fragrant, vibrant, and completely unexpected in the middle of Manhattan.
Over at Rockefeller Center, spring installations and floral moments turn iconic spaces into something entirely new- and incredibly photogenic.
This is also one of the best times to experience Broadway, wander museum corridors without peak-season crowds, and actually walk the city- comfortably, curiously, and without rushing. Just be sure to bring a jacket. It may be warmer during the day, but wind and chills in spring can still catch you here and there.
For families, it’s the sweet spot. New York feels exciting- but manageable. You can linger. You can explore. You can enjoy the in-between moments just as much as the big ones.
Washington, D.C. — A Full-Circle Spring Moment

There’s something incredibly special about Washington, D.C. in spring- and for me, it’s deeply personal.
I once had the honor of serving as Grand Marshal of the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, and it remains one of those unforgettable, full-circle experiences. Being surrounded by the blossoms at peak bloom- those soft pinks and whites set against the monuments was absolutely magical. The entire city feels like it’s glowing.
The broader National Cherry Blossom Festival brings that energy to life across the city, especially around the Tidal Basin, where the blooms frame the Jefferson Memorial in a way that feels almost surreal.
It’s one of those moments where travel becomes more than just a trip- it becomes a memory you carry with you. Especially leading up to the 250th anniversary. With free entry to all the Smithsonian museums, this is a must for every family.
Paris — Effortless, Elegant, and Finally Breathing
In Paris, spring feels like you’ve arrived at exactly the right moment.
The gardens- especially Luxembourg Gardens- are waking up, café terraces fill again, and the city feels lighter, more relaxed. It’s Paris without the pressure.
You’re not racing through landmarks- you’re lingering over coffee, strolling along the Seine, and letting the experience unfold.
London — Parks, Palaces, and That First Hint of Sunshine
London in spring is quietly spectacular.
Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens are in bloom, and the city starts to stretch into longer, brighter days. Add in world-class museums (many free), afternoon tea, and just enough sunshine to make it all feel cinematic- and you have a trip that balances culture and ease beautifully.
Amsterdam — Tulips and Total Joy

If spring had a color palette, it might look like Amsterdam.
At Keukenhof Gardens, millions of tulips bloom in vibrant waves- it’s immersive, joyful, and surprisingly easy to navigate as a family.
Back in the city, canals buzz back to life, cafés spill outdoors, and bikes weave through it all in that effortlessly cool, unmistakable Amsterdam way.
Kyoto — Beauty That Stops You
There are few places as emotionally impactful in spring as Kyoto.
Cherry blossoms drift through temple courtyards and line pathways like the Philosopher’s Path, creating moments that feel almost suspended in time.
This isn’t just a trip- it’s an experience. One that introduces kids (and reminds adults) of the beauty in fleeting moments.
Maui — That Perfect Shoulder-Season Escape
Spring in Maui is one of travel’s best-kept secrets.
The weather is nearly perfect, crowds are lighter, and you can still catch the tail end of whale season. Days are simple in the best way- poke bowls, beach time, and family-friendly spots like Baby Beach, where the water stays calm and shallow (it's a favorite for our family).
It’s relaxed, easy, and exactly what you want it to be.
Florida — Sunshine Without the Rush
If New York is energy, Florida is the exhale.
April and May sit just outside peak spring break, which means warm, beautiful weather without the intensity. Where you go shapes the experience:
Palm Beach feels polished and quietly luxurious
Miami is vibrant, stylish, and alive
Vero Beach is relaxed, family-friendly, and under the radar
Florida isn’t about doing everything- it’s about how it feels while you’re there. And in April and May, it feels easy.
Charleston — Southern Charm, Perfectly Timed
Charleston in spring might be one of the best-kept secrets in the U.S.
Jasmine is in bloom, the weather is warm but comfortable, and the entire city feels alive without being crowded. It’s made for walking—historic homes, waterfront views, and one of the most compelling food scenes in the country.
It’s the kind of place that quietly overdelivers.
Sedona — Space to Reset
Spring in Sedona is unexpected—in the best way.
Wildflowers bloom against those iconic red rocks, temperatures are ideal for hiking, and there’s a stillness that’s hard to find elsewhere.
For families, it offers something different: space. And that can be just as valuable as any itinerary.
Napa Valley — Wine Country Without the Crowds
Napa Valley in spring is lush, green, and just waking up.
Vineyards are vibrant, tastings feel more intimate, and the entire region carries that early-season calm. Even for families, it works- think scenic drives, incredible food, and a slower pace that invites you to actually savor it.
Spring lives in that rare intersection of beauty and balance.
There’s more availability. More flexibility. More room to experience a place instead of rushing through it. So if you're thinking about taking your next trip before summer, this is your time.
