In Case You Missed It on FOX: Smart Last-Minute Spring Break Travel Tips

Spring break is right around the corner- and if you haven’t booked anything yet, take a breath.
This is the moment when most families assume they’ve missed the window. Flights feel expensive, hotels look picked over, and the pressure to “figure something out” starts creeping in.
But here’s the reality: some of the best spring break trips are booked late. You just need to know where to look and how to think about it.
I just shared these Spring Break travel tips on FOX this morning, and the biggest takeaway is this: last-minute travel isn’t about luck- it’s about strategy.
Start Here: The Biggest Mistake People Make

The number one mistake I see? Thinking you're being flexible on dates, but you're really boxing yourself in on a specific day of the week.
People say they’re flexible- but then only search Saturday-to-Saturday trips, or lock into one exact destination.
In reality, shifting your departure by even a day or two can:
Dramatically lower prices
Open up better flight times
Reduce crowds
You really want to look at those Tuesday through Thursday departure windows. Spring break pricing is incredibly date-sensitive. The families who win are the ones willing to move just slightly outside the peak window.
Timing Matters More Than Destination
If you’re deciding when to go, here’s the insider approach:
Before peak spring break weeks - Better prices, fewer crowds
After peak weeks - More availability, often calmer experience
Right in the middle - Highest prices, most congestion
If your schedule allows it, traveling just ahead of the rush is often the sweet spot.
The Easiest Last-Minute Vacation? Cruises.
If there’s one travel hack I recommend over and over again for families, it’s this:
Book a cruise.
Lines like Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line, and Disney Cruise Line often still have cabins available close to departure- especially because ships are so large.
And for spring break, cruises solve almost every problem at once:
No flight coordination (in many cases)
Meals, entertainment, and activities included
Built-in kids’ clubs and teen spaces
Multiple destinations without repacking
It’s one of the rare vacations where kids feel independent, and parents actually relax. Everything is built in, so you don't have to worry about trying to get that great table at that one restaurant last-minute or booking something fun to do at night.
In our family, cruising has consistently been one of the easiest, most enjoyable ways to travel- especially last-minute.
Not Into Cruises? Think Simple, Not Far
The best last-minute trips aren’t always the most exotic- they’re the most efficient.
Quick City Escapes
Short trips can feel just as meaningful as long ones:
Food-focused cities
Walkable downtowns
Places with built-in culture and activities
These are ideal for 2–4 nights and require far less planning.
Easy Beach Getaways
If your goal is sunshine and relaxation, keep it simple:
Destinations with frequent flights
Large resorts with availability
All-inclusive options (for predictable pricing)
The key is choosing places designed for volume- they’re more likely to still have space.
Driveable Adventures
Never underestimate how powerful a great road trip can be.
National parks, coastal towns, and nearby cities often deliver:
Lower costs
More flexibility
Less stress overall
Sometimes the best spring break isn’t the one that’s farthest away- it’s the one that’s easiest to enjoy.
Pay Attention to the News
We’re closely watching the situation unfolding in Mexico following recent military operations and reports of unrest in parts of Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, and throughout Jalisco.
Our hearts are with the families, communities, and travelers affected. We are praying for a swift end to the violence and for the safety of everyone in the region.
Several flights have been disrupted or canceled, and conditions can change quickly.
Travelers with upcoming plans should monitor their airline communications closely and regularly check updates from the U.S. Department of State, including current travel advisories.
As always, stay informed, stay flexible, and prioritize safety above all else. It’s also smart to check the latest guidance from the U.S. Department of State, including travel advisories and the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for any international trips.
Where the Best Value Is Right Now
If you’re flexible, the strongest value tends to fall into three categories:
Cruises - Maximum value, minimal planning
Nearby international destinations - Easy access, strong resort inventory
Domestic escapes - Big experiences without peak-season pricing
And here’s the truth most people overlook: At this point, simplicity is value.
If I Had to Leave Tomorrow…
I’d choose a short, easy itinerary that maximizes experience without adding stress-something with a balance of downtime and adventure. Because that’s what spring break is really about. Not perfection. Not distance. Just time together that actually feels like a break.
