As the crisp air of September signals the onset of fall, it's the perfect time to plan a getaway and bask in the beauty of the changing season. The cooler weather, vibrant foliage, and fewer crowds make early autumn an ideal travel period.

Whether you're seeking nature, adventure, or relaxation, here are some great fall getaways for your September escape.

1. New England, USA

When it comes to fall foliage, few places are as iconic as New England. September is when the leaves start their transformation into fiery reds, oranges, and golds. Take a scenic drive through Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, or New Hampshire, where winding roads lead through dense forests ablaze with color. We've enjoyed all four states and they all offer spectacular moments. Popular routes like Vermont’s Route 100 or New Hampshire’s Kancamagus Highway offer breathtaking views. Consider staying in a cozy cabin or a quaint bed-and-breakfast, and don't miss local apple orchards or fall festivals for the ultimate seasonal experience.

2. The Great Smoky Mountains, USA

Straddling the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers one of the most beautiful fall displays in the southeastern United States. September marks the early days of leaf-peeping season, with vibrant hues emerging across the mountains. Take a hike along trails like Alum Cave or Clingmans Dome to see the full splendor of the changing landscape. The cooler temperatures also make it an ideal time for outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, and camping. For those seeking relaxation, nearby Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge offer charming accommodations and mountain views.

3. Zion National Park, USA

Zion National Park in Utah is a spectacular September destination. We were there just last weekend and the weather was still warm, but beautiful. With its dramatic red cliffs and towering sandstone formations, Zion offers breathtaking scenery year-round, but as we get into September you'll often enjoy cooler temperatures, making it an ideal time for hiking and exploring. The park’s famous trails, such as Angels Landing and The Narrows, are less crowded in early fall, allowing for a more serene experience. The contrasting colors of Zion’s lush green valley, rugged cliffs, and crystal-clear rivers create a stunning landscape perfect for photography and adventure. Visitors can enjoy rock climbing, canyoneering, or simply taking in the mesmerizing views.

4. Bavaria, Germany

For a taste of European fall charm, Bavaria in Germany is an excellent September getaway. The region is known for its picturesque villages, rolling hills, and fairy-tale castles. Neuschwanstein Castle, with its towering spires framed by autumnal forests, is a must-see. The weather is still mild in September, making it ideal for exploring Munich's beer gardens, strolling through the countryside, or taking in the region’s famous Oktoberfest festivities, which begin in late September. Bavaria’s alpine backdrop makes for a magical fall vacation filled with history, culture, and stunning natural beauty.

5. Rocky Mountain National Park, USA

September is one of the best months to visit Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. The summer crowds have dwindled, and the park’s famous elk are in full rut, filling the air with their bugling calls. As the aspen trees turn a brilliant gold, the mountains provide a stunning contrast with their rugged peaks dusted with early snow. Hikers will enjoy the cooler temperatures, and scenic drives like Trail Ridge Road offer panoramic views of the park’s majestic landscape. The park’s proximity to the charming town of Estes Park makes it easy to combine adventure with comfort.

6. Sonoma Valley, USA

Fall in wine country is an experience not to be missed, and Sonoma Valley in California offers a stunning September getaway. We absolutely adore Sonoma in the fall. The vineyards come alive with the grape harvest, known as "crush season." You can participate in wine tastings, take a vineyard tour, or even witness the winemaking process firsthand. The weather in Sonoma in September is still warm, with cool breezes in the evenings, making it perfect for outdoor activities like hot air balloon rides, cycling tours, or simply enjoying the picturesque scenery of rolling hills dotted with vines. Indulge in gourmet food and wine pairings as you embrace the slower pace of wine country living.

September is a magical time to embark on a fall getaway, with destinations offering everything from stunning foliage and outdoor adventures to cultural experiences and culinary delights. Whether you're exploring the vibrant colors of New England, hiking in the majestic Rocky Mountains, trekking through Zion National Park, or sipping wine in Sonoma Valley, the early days of autumn provide the perfect backdrop for a memorable vacation. So, pack your bags, breathe in the crisp fall air, and enjoy the beauty of the season.
